From the Principal's Desk

Thanks to all of you for your support as we begin the 2001-02 school year on a most positive note. I appreciate the dedication and commitment of faculty, staff, parents and other community members.

Please be reminded of our mission:

"Teach great knowledge to our children
Inspire their confidence
Make them curious
Encourage them to be kind"

Our goals this year focus on continuous improvement. As part of this effort, Inman will begin implementing "The Core Knowledge" curriculum as we focus on even higher academic performance. Additionally, I encourage students to take advantage of the many opportunities available at our school. This is a time to explore areas of interest. Seize the chance to discover, develop, and display your talents.

Inman is a great place to both teach and learn. We pledge our best efforts on behalf of every one of our customers, our students.

Michael Cooper
Interim Principal

From the PTA President

On behalf of all the parents at Inman, I want to welcome Michael Cooper and thank him for stepping in as Interim Principal. I think he was enjoying retirement pretty well, so I admire his obvious commitment to the welfare of our children and school. As we look for a new principal, I appreciate the efforts of APS to include the parents and community in the process, as we all want the best for Inman.

During the month of September, the PTA will sponsor its annual fundraiser, the Magazine Sale/Family Donation Campaign. We are very fortunate to be a part of such a giving school community. The money raised will go to enrich your child's educational experience through science, athletics, clubs, academic competitions and the arts. We fund teacher grants and start-up money, supplement curriculum and technology, and the PTA provides communication vehicles through the Insight, the Homework Infoline, teacher voicemail, and the call out system. We will also continue to work on facility improvements both inside and out.

With the Family Donation Campaign, we are asking families to make a 100% tax-deductible gift to Inman. We all give money to causes that are important to us, so please consider Inman when investing your money in the future. We have great kids here that deserve all that we can give them. The Magazine Sale is the second half of our fundraising campaign and is a great way for the students to support their school. Our goal this year is maximum participation. Please remind people that they can RENEW existing subscriptions as well as purchase new ones. We've added an additional dance this year. The price of admission is the sale of only five magazine subscriptions, and there will be all kinds of raffles at the dance to win cool prizes!

On a closing note, I think one of the best things about Inman is the inclusive community that we have. Not everyone is in a position to support Inman in a financial way, however, everyone is in a position to be supportive of Inman in some way. Maybe it's getting your child to school on time so that they have the best opportunity to learn. In any case, I like the fact that we can support each other's children, whether it's with our time, our talents, or our money. Thank you all for making Inman what it is.

Martha Rusche
PTA President

Farewell Reception for Mr. Doran

Please join the teachers and parents
of Inman for a reception honoring
Mr. Don Doran
on Tuesday, September 25, 2001
from 5:00 - 6:00 PM
in the Inman Media Center.
Help us wish Mr. Doran good luck in his
new position as Executive Director,
School Reform Team 1.

Principal Profile Community Meeting

Who will be the next principal of Inman Middle School? Anyone who wants to help answer that question should attend a special community meeting in the Inman media center Thursday Sept. 13 at 7 pm. Come hear the latest on the search for Mr. Doran's successor and how we parents can play a part in the process. Help us define what we like about Inman and the kind of leadership we will need to make it even better. For more information, contact Shepard Barbash at edjazz@mindspring.com

Extracurricular Activities

7th and 8th grade Science Fair workshop

Jeff Cramer from Grady High School will conduct an interesting, fun, and free Science and Math Fair workshop for Inman 7th and 8th graders and their parents on September 20 at Inman Middle School. This workshop is designed to get students thinking about what it means to test a hypothesis and conduct an investigation. Find out how the process of an investigation can be applied to anything, and learn how to do science anywhere!

Great preparation for the required 7th grade math project and 8th grade science project!

Thursday, September 20 - 7 PM TO 8 PM
Credit will be given to all 7th and 8th grade students who attend.

Questions? Contact Debbie Butterfield at dbutter100@aol.com

Forensics Program

Students who were active members of the Debate Club last school year represented Inman Middle School with pride, class, and style. Our talented, dedicated children spent time after school and on the weekends making preparations for their upcoming competitions. Inman students consistently won awards at area tournaments for enhanced critical thinking and promotion of communication skills.

The 2001-2002 school year will offer for the first time a Communication Skills and Debate Strategies class. This course is a component of the Exploratory Rotation and will provide opportunities for students to understand the importance of communication, techniques of group discussion, public speaking and evaluation, fundamentals of parliamentary procedure, and other elements of debate. Mr. Hutcherson will be teaching this class and he and Ms. Shaw will coach the team.

The Debate Club is open to all Inman Middle School students. Our first meeting will be held on Monday, September 10th, from 3:15-4:30 in room 202. It is extremely important that students attend this informational meeting because the first tournament is only a couple of weeks away.

Mark your calendars! Inman Middle School will host the September 29th Debate Tournament. We desperately need parent and student volunteers. Please contact Mr. Hutcherson at ChrisHutch1874@msn.com or Ms. Shaw at shawsga@aol.com.

Photography Club

Inman's Photography Program will start again on Wednesday, September 12th at 3:15. Meet with Vicki Ragan in the Photography Room located through the double doors at the end of the 6-1 hall. Ms. Ragan, Inman parent and professional photographer will give out information about the program and the after school Photography Club meetings. Parents who are experienced photographers are needed to work with Ms. Ragan instructing Inman students in this exciting art opportunity. Other parents are needed to supervise students who are printing and developing their photographs. There are new improved darkroom facilities thanks to Inman parents' volunteer work and funding from the Arthur Blank Family Foundation. Call Vicki Ragan at 404 875 -6518 for more information.
