A Message from the Principal

I am Mr. Raymond Williams and I joined the Inman Middle School staff as your Interim Principal in November, 2001. Thus far, the majority of my time has been spent becoming oriented to the campus and getting to know the staff, children, and parents. I have been involved in the educational arena for more than 40 years and I cannot tell you how fortunate our kids are to attend this school. I am extremely impressed with the facilities and the high level of commitment from all the employees and the community. The level of parental involvement at Inman is phenomenal and I have no doubt that it ensures the institution's viability and success.

I hope all of you had a safe and joyous Holiday Season and I am looking forward to working with each one of you in 2002. Our emphasis will be on instilling a "Whole Child" concept. This initiative will require us to reach out to all students both academically and in their extra curricular pursuits. Our goal will be to not only produce academic scholars, but also individuals who are well-rounded and contributing members of society. Once again, I would like to thank you for your support and encouragement and would like to pledge my commitment to the Inman Middle School community and its children.

Mr. Raymond Williams
Interim Principal

From the PTA President

I hope all of you had a wonderful holiday break and were able to spend some time relaxing with family and friends. I want to welcome Mr. Raymond Williams to Inman as interim principal. Mr. Williams brings with him a wealth of experience, which will benefit all of us at Inman. Please take a moment to say hello. Mr. Williams is very interested in getting to know the families at Inman and I know he will appreciate all the support we can give him.

January is going to be a very busy month for us beginning with our PTA board meeting on January 10. Just a reminder that PTA board meetings are open to everyone, so please feel free to come! There is also the January CINS meeting, a prospective student/parent open house, a Hands on Atlanta work day, a school dance, the eighth grade Georgia writing test, a Grady magnet coffee, basketball games, a jazz band performance at Border's book store, not to mention the annual spaghetti supper and book fair kick off on February 1. So, please check out the enclosed calendar for a complete list of all of the activities! Here's to a great second semester!

Hands on Atlanta Day
January 21, 2002

Hands on Atlanta will sponsor an Inman workday on Monday, January 21, as part of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Service Summit. Hands on Atlanta has adopted the motto, "a day on, not a day off" in celebration of Dr. King's birthday. The day will be spent scraping, priming, and painting several areas around the school that are in need of painting. Hands on Atlanta is providing all the materials for this project and will have volunteers working in the school, but parents are VERY welcome to join the process. Please call Megan Reelitz, Hands on Atlanta coordinator at Inman, to volunteer (404-853-4017)!! In addition, there will be another parent workday in February to finish the project so watch for the date to mark on your calendar.

Inman Safety Information

To ensure the safety of our children, parking in the front circle is no longer allowed. Enthusiastic students and cars just don't mix! The circle is to be used for deliveries and drop off of the physically challenged only.

Also, please make sure that your child has a way home after school. All students should be off campus by 3:15 pm unless they are in a supervised club or after school program at Inman. There are no teachers or adults assigned to watch students outside the building after school. You will be contacted if your child is just "hanging out" outside the building after 3:15 pm. Please contact the office with questions or to enroll your child in one of Inman's excellent after school programs. Thank you for your cooperation!

SGA UPDATE

Thanks to all those students and parents who helped contribute to our annual holiday project, "Adopt-A-Child." This year's event was a HUGE success, and every child was overjoyed and blessed to have such a wonderful Christmas.

The second semester will be a busy one. To start off the second half of the year, we will be sponsoring the first annual "Academic Olympics," an educational initiative where each homeroom will be a team that will work to win the Inman Cup. Plans are currently in the making and the details are almost ironed out. More information will be in the Insight as the year progresses.

We will also be participating in Black History Month celebrations this February. The SGA has reached both Congressman John Lewis and Mayor-elect Shirley Franklin, both of whom have agreed to come speak to the school.

Spirit Day is an event that will be held on January 18th, in preparation for "Fun Week." In order to have it, however, we need 50% participation on the 18th of students wearing Green and White in show of their support and spirit for the school.

Hope everyone had a great holiday season, and we look forward to the next months.

Communications Magnet Open House on January 24

This is a wonderful opportunity for students and parents to meet all the teachers in the Magnet Program and to hear each speak about their area of particular concentration. Students currently in the program from the different areas of interest are there to specifically talk to the Inman students. Many questions can be answered at this time. This will be an evening meeting. The location and time will be announced in January. For more information contact Debbie Miller.

TALENT SHOW 2002
START PLANNING AND PREPARING YOUR ACT NOW!

That's right. It's time to start preparing for the try-outs (auditions)
for Inman's 2002 Talent Show.

The try-outs will be TWO DAYS ONLY: Tuesday, Jan. 22, and Wednesday, Jan 23, from 3-5 p.m. in the school auditorium. Groups and individuals will have THREE MINUTES to display their talent for a panel of judges made up of teachers and parents.

Important: Student "acts" do not need to be finished or completely polished. But you DO need to show the judges that you have what it takes to make the cut. Last year's show ran nearly three hours and while it was GREAT, it was too long! It is likely that we will NOT have as many acts this year. Last year there were about 30; this time around, we are aiming for 25 or less. So: Only the top groups and individuals will be invited to perform in the show that will be staged Friday, March 8, in the Grady High auditorium.

Points to consider:
  • Those trying out need to sign up to do so on official sign-up sheets that will be posted after the holiday break. Sign up for ONE slot on one day. Students do not report both days. If you show up to audition and you did not sign up on that day, then you will need to wait until everyone who did sign up goes first and the judges will fit you in at the end, IF there's time.
    So: SIGN UP!

  • To be in the show in any capacity (even as a backup dancer or singer or even if you are going to assist someone in any way), a student MUST participate in the try-outs. Students will NOT be added to the show in any way if they were not at the try-outs.

  • Everyone who is invited to participate in the show MUST be in the opening number and MUST attend at least three rehearsals for the opening number.

  • If you try out for the show but are not asked to perform your own act, you may still be in the opening number.

  • Everyone in the show MUST attend final run-through rehearsals, which will be immediately after school on Wednesday, March 6, and Thursday, March 7, at Grady.

  • BE CREATIVE! There's a huge amount of talent and diversity at this school and this show gives us a chance to celebrate that. Your chances of winning a slot in the show are best when you think "outside the box." In other words, singing and dancing to pop hits is fine, but ONLY the VERY BEST of those acts will get in this year. How about a comedy act or two? Instrumentalists? Ventriloquists? Once again, we want a highly entertaining show, but we would like to feature more breadth and scope.

Julie Bookman will direct the show for the third year and NEEDS fellow parents and all others interested to help in myriad ways. She also needs responsible, hard-working students to be stage managers. For more info, or to help out with this incredibly fun effort, contact Julie Bookman.

The Eagles Debate Team Soars to the Top

Congratulations to the Inman Debate Team for its dynamic triumph against 13 other schools in the Atlanta Public School System and the private sector on Saturday, December 1st.

Inman students were awarded 33 medals for this one tournament, almost 1/3 of the total number of awards given for this competition!

Debate continues to grow in numbers and has generated much interest since the beginning of the school year. Inman's team has a lot to be thankful for including the guest speakers from Emory who visited and shared a wealth of debate knowledge with students. Inman is also very fortunate to have the experience of Mr. Alex Thomas, a veteran debater from Grady High School, who will assist at the meetings and workshop with interested debate students two days a week for the remainder of the school year.

Inman celebrated many accolades during 2001. Look out Eagles, because better things are expected for the coming year.

See your paper copy of the Inman Insight for a list of student winners.

Math and Science Fair Report

The annual Math/Science Fair was a huge success. Over one hundred 7th and 8th grade projects were judged December 11. Seniors from Grady, education students from Georgia State, 6th grade teachers, and retired teachers served as judges. Students demonstrated that they were able to successfully conduct active investigations in both math and science. First place winners will compete in the Citywide Science/Math Congress in February. Congratulations to all winners.

See your paper copy of the Inman Insight for a list of student winners.

Inman Summer Science Camp

A two-week summer science camp is being developed for current 6th and 7th grade Inman Middle School students. A science camp flyer will be sent home and registration forms will be given to students in late January. Good grades and teacher recommendations will be required. This is a small pilot program and spaces are limited. Questions? Contact Debbie Butterfield or Gail Munoz.
