In the first two years of operation of our store in Virginia-Highland, Ten Thousand Villages sold enough crafts to provide full-time employment at fair wages for over 200 craftspeople in the developing world. To do this, we relied almost entirely on volunteers.
Ten Thousand Villages depends on volunteers to help the manager with the daily operations of the store. Volunteers are trained to be sales clerks, to unpack merchandise, stock shelves and keep them neat, help with inventory and serve customers. Volunteers are encouraged to learn as much as they can about the crafts and the people who make them so that they can be advocates for the craftspeople.
Volunteers usually work eight hours per month. The volunteer coordinator will work with volunteers to be flexible in scheduling.
The success of Ten Thousand Villages largely depends on the commitment and enthusiasm of volunteers. Each volunteer will bring special strengths and insights to the operation of the store. We hope it will be a rewarding experience for all who participate.
If you are interested in volunteering at Ten Thousand Villages, please fill out our Volunteer Application or call Marg Lambert at 404.892.5307.
