Ten Thousand Villages, located in Virginia-Highland at North Highland and St. Charles, has doubled its size, and will be celebrating its expansion (as well as its sixth anniversary) on September 17-19, 1999. Special activities are planned, with door prizes, discounted new items, refreshments, and international music.
Ten Thousand Villages is a nonprofit international gift store that sells fairly traded handicrafts made by Third World artisans who would otherwise be unemployed or underemployed. On average, $1,200 in retail sales provides the equivalent of full-time work for one artisan for one year. In its six years of operation, Ten Thousand Villages has sold enough handicrafts to provide full-time employment at fair wages for over 700 artisans.
The new larger space has allowed the store to expand their product lines as well, including two new lines of women's clothing and an expanded selection of furniture. Colorful new clothing has arrived from suppliers in Indonesia and India:
- Blue Hand markets clothing from Indonesia with original designs created through the traditional art of batiking. All their dresses are 100% wash and dry rayon, with no fading or shrinking. As a part of the International Federation of Alternative Trade (IFAT), Blue Hand pays its artisans high salaries and offers profit sharing.
- MarketPlace: Handwork of India is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping women and disabled people in India become self-sufficient. They make cotton dresses, jackets, vests and skirts in bold prints using natural dyes. A small section of hand embroidery makes each piece one of a kind. In addition to fair wages, artisans are helped with healthcare and are taught English language and computer skills.
In addition to these items, Ten Thousand Villages sells a wide array of unique home and decorative accessories, jewelry, toys, games, and musical instruments created by Third World artisans in more than 35 countries.
The store is located 1056 St. Charles Ave. Store hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 11:00a to 6:00p, and Sunday 1:00p to 5:00p. For more information about Ten Thousand Villages, check out their website.
